Over the past four years, I’ve been a staple on the Producers Guild Awards red carpet, but this year’s experience marked a historic turning point for diverse representation in film and television. For the first time, a true sense of unity and purpose filled the air. As a mixed woman of color (Filipino, Spanish, Mexican, and Italian), I have personally never felt more seen on a carpet, and I left with high hopes that the industry is finally moving in a brand-new direction.
I had the privilege of speaking with incredible visionaries who are actively shaping this new landscape. I caught up with Constance Wu as Crazy Rich Asians was beginning to make massive waves, and Kenya Barris, the brilliant creator of black-ish. I also spoke with Alfonso Cuarón about his deeply personal masterpiece Roma, and Marvel Studios Chairman Kevin Feige on the cultural phenomenon of Black Panther. Every single one of them shared a powerful sense of fortitude, proving they are completely dedicated to continuing this effort and driving lasting, structural change.
It is an incredibly proud moment to celebrate an awards season where every single piece of my own heritage is beautifully represented both in front of and behind the camera.
